The latest production statistics published by the World Steel Association (worldsteel) indicates that the crude steel production by 67 countries reporting to the Association totaled 143.580 Million tonnes during the month of August this year. The monthly crude steel output surged higher by 6.3% when compared with the output during the same month a year before. These 67 countries had accounted for approximately 99% of the total world crude steel production during the previous year.
The following table provides the list of world’s top ten producers of crude steel during the month of August this year.

The preliminary data published by the World Steel Association suggests that the production of direct reduced iron (DRI) by world countries has declined slightly by nearly 0.5% in August this year. This is upon comparison with the previous month output. The production totaled 4.730 million metric tons (Mt), as compared with 4.752 Mt during the month prior to that.
Iran continued to be the leading DRI producer with estimated output of 1.430 Mt. The country’s output remained essentially flat when compared with the previous month. India’s DRI output totaled 1.230 Mt, reporting marginal decline from 1.234 Mt in July. The Mexican DRI output in August this year amounted to 510,000 metric tons, which is slightly higher than 509,000 metric tons output recorded during the month prior to that. The monthly output by other eleven DRI producing countries in metric tons are: Canada (155), Saudi Arabia (452), Trinidad & Tobago (Nil), Argentina (Nil), Peru (Nil), Venezuela (55), Egypt (300), Libya (30), South Africa (88), Qatar (232) and United Arab Emirates (248).
The below table lists the world’s top ten DRI producing nations during the initial eight-month period of the current year.
