‘Steel companies need innovation, new technology to survive competition’

Continuous innovation and adoption of new technologies is required for steel sector companies to survive and stay ahead of the curve. Incidentally, new technologies that utilise lower quality inputs are being experimented with in steel plants across the country.

These were amongst the moot points that came up in a two-day national seminar organised by the Indian Institute of Metals (IIM), Durgapur Chapter, along with the Durgapur Steel Plant and Alloy Steels Plant.

“Continuous innovation and adopting new technologies are essentially required not only to stay ahead but also to survive in the fiercely competitive steel market,” said A. K. Rath, CEO, DSP. In fact, Anand Sen, President (TQM & Steel Business), TATA Steel, pointed out that innovation is required in both steel making and steel usage.

“There are ample opportunities on both fronts,” he said. The seminar, called ‘Expanding Horizons of Technology Applications in Iron & Steel’ began on June 14 and will have 112 delegates from around 20 organisations participating in the workshop, DSP said in a release.
