Canada prepares for safeguard actions

The Canadian government is seeking public comment on possible safeguard actions for a variety of imported steel products, Kallanish learns from a Department of Finance release.

Echoing comments made by Finance Minister Bill Morneau on Tuesday at ArcelorMittal Dofasco, the release names a slew of product categories that may soon be subject to safeguard action. These include: steel plate; rebar; energy tubulars; hot-rolled sheet; pre-painted steel; stainless steel wire; and wire rod.

The safeguard actions are in response to the US' 232 tariffs, which may divert unwanted tons to the country.

"The government will always stand up for Canadian workers and Canadian businesses, and that means taking action to counter unfair trade practices when merited," Morneau says. "International trade unquestionably strengthens Canada's economy, but it must be fair and open, and it must result in growth that works for everyone."

Comments will be accepted through 29 August.
