Morocco instigates review of wire rod/rebar import safeguards

The Moroccan Ministry of Industry, Trade, Investment and Digital Economy says that it decided to review the safeguard period on imports of wire rod and rebar into the country. This is based on a request for an extension from l'Association des Sidérurgistes du Maroc (ASM), the Moroccan Metallurgical Association, Kallanish learns from a ministry statement.

After having reviewed the information contained in the request the ministry says that it considers that there is justification for opening a review investigation on the extension of safeguards. This was scheduled to begin on 13 August.

The products in question are under harmonised codes 7213.91.90.00 (wire rod) and 7214.99.91.00 and 7214.20.90.00 (rebar). The safeguard measure in force consists of a specific additional duty of MAD 0.55/kg ($0.06/kg) applied above the average of 121,000 tonnes for wire rod imports and 72,600t for imports of rebar.

The sliding scale measures were first introduced in January 2016 and apply up to 31 December 2018.

The ministry has therefore published an invitation to participate in the investigation to domestic producers of the products as well as importers and external exporters. Interested parties have fifteen days from 13 August to express an interest in participating and will then have a further 30 days to submit information to the review.
