Mexico has concerns about the decision of the Canadian government to impose safeguard measures for some steel products. These will impact Mexican exports such as pipe and wire rod says the Latin American country’s Ministry of Economy in a statement monitored by Kallanish.
Mexico’s government will take actions to protect its steel export in the short term using all mechanisms in the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta) and the World Trade Organization (WTO). It intends to achieve total exclusion from safeguard measures, the Ministry of Economy confirms.
“Mexico will carefully review the measures imposed, since they could be in violation of Canada's international commitments such as Nafta in addition to jeopardising the competitiveness and commercial integration of the regional industry,” the Mexican authorities say. Mexico deeply regrets that these measures are being taken when both countries have made progress in the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) negotiations.
The Canadian government has introduced safeguard measures for seven classes of steel products in order to prevent the diversion of foreign steel products into Canada (see Kallanish 12 October).
