The weekly data published by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) suggests considerable increase in raw steel production by the country during the week ending on February 23, 2019.
The domestic U.S. raw steel production totaled 1.907 million net tons (NT), higher by 5.0% when compared with the production during the same period in the prior year. The raw steel output had totaled only 1.817 million NT in the week ending February 23, 2018. Also, the capacity utilization rate surged higher from 77.9% to 81.9% over the year.
When compared with the prior week, the U.S. weekly raw steel production was up marginally by 1.1%. The capacity utilization rate too witnessed marginal uptick from 81.0%. The output had totaled 1.886 million NT during the week ending February 16, 2019.
The year-to-date production through February 23, 2019 totaled 14.644 million NT, higher by nearly 8.0% when compared with the production of 13.564 million NT during the same period in 2018. The capability utilization rate recorded notable jump, surging higher significantly from 75.7% to 80.9% over the year.
Southern region topped the production with 736,000 net tons, closely followed by Great Lakes region with 682,000 net tons. The output by other regions in thousands of net tons is as follows: North East (213), Midwest (205) and Western (73).
