Colombia extends duty on rebar imports

The Colombian authorities have decided to extend and increase existing anti-dumping safeguard measures on imports of corrugated or deformed steel bar or rod.  This is according to a document from the foreign trade secretariat of the Colombian Ministry of Industry (MCIT), monitored by Kallanish.

The MCIT says it is applying an additional 8.5% anti-dumping duty to the current 10% on imported rebar from countries with which Colombia has no free trade agreement. MCIT notes that there is sufficient evidence of damage to domestic production of the products classified under HS codes 7213.10.00.00 and 7214.20.00.00. The authority however exempted from the tariff those imports that are made within the framework of the so-called Vallejo Plan, a temporary import programme.

"The purpose of the measure is to correct the damage that could be caused to the national industry by the increase of imports at low prices. The tariff is set to restore the conditions of market competition and avoid practices of unfair competition," the MCIT says in a note. The protective measure was taken after a technical study, which took into account all market variables and the view of entrepreneurs from various sectors. "This was so that Colombian products can compete in a demanding and dynamic international market," the MCIT secretary, José Manuel Restrepo Abondano commented.

The definitive measure will be in place for two years.
