US sheet buyers see price floor cracks

While the US sheet floor is slowly firming, market sources maintain that there are still pockets of low-priced hot-rolled available, Kallanish understands.

Kallanish increased its hot-rolled prices Monday to $730-750/short ton, with cold-rolled moving up to $840-860/st. All prices are ex-works, domestic mill.

A West Coast buyer maintains that $700/st hot-rolled is still available in his market, however. A Midwest buyer likewise pegs some local pricing at $690-720/st.

The Midwest buyer adds that strong cold-rolled and galvanized demand may soon spur another increase, which will boost hot-rolled, as well.

“There’s lots of rumours of an impending increase,” he says. “Cold-rolled and galv are extremely strong, but hot-rolled is just average.”
