EU-28 Crude Steel Production Slumped 5%

The European crude steel production reported decline during February 2019. The domestic production totaled 12.984 million tonnes (Mt) during the month, as reported by the World Steel Association (worldsteel). This is modestly lower by 5.0% when matched with the output of 13.664 Mt achieved by the region in the same month a year before. The cumulative steel output during Jan-Feb ‘19 too reported nominal decline by 3.9% over the previous year.

The top five steel producing countries in the region were Germany, Italy, France, Spain and Poland. The combined production by the above five countries totaled 8.349 Mt, accounting for more than 64% of the total regional output. Germany topped the list, producing 3.12 Mt of steel during the month. The German production registered a decline of 9.4% over the previous year. Italy too reported marginal drop in steel output during the month. The Italian production totaled 2.046 Mt, down marginally by 2.7% year-on-year. France’s output dropped by 0.3%, whereas the output by Spain was up by 2.5%. A year-on-year decline of 6.8% was witnessed in Poland’s Feb ’19 output.

The EU-28 crude steel production totaled 26.878 Mt during Jan-Feb ‘19. Over the two-month period, Croatia reported biggest jump in output. The country’s output surged higher by over 228%. On the contrary, output by Finland reported substantial decline by nearly 19% over the previous year.
