Vietnamese steelmaker Tong Dong A Steel plans a significant increase in output in 2019, Kallanish learns from the company during a visit to its plant in Binh Duong province on 10 April.
Tong Dong A is a flat steel specialist mainly producing galvanized steel coils (GI) and galvanized-aluminium steel coils (GL). Output from the mill is planned to reach 720,000 tonnes this year, up 20% from 2018.
The steel mill has been developed in two phases. The first phase has 100,000 tonnes/year of GL capacity and the second phase has 600,000 t/y of GI and GL capacity. It operates pickling lines, two GL lines and two GI/GL line in its second phase. In addition, the company just put one GI square pipe line into production in late last year, with a monthly output of 5,000t.
The company mainly outsources its HRC from local steel mills although a small amount of cold-rolled coil is purchased from Posco.
Tong Dong A sells 60% of its production domestically with 40% of its output going to export. In 2019, its target is to maintain its export ratio of 40%. “We are expecting to see the company’s exports ratio grow to 45% and domestic sales to reduce slightly to 55% of our production in the years to come,” a representative from the company's export department says.
