Steel Dynamics Inc has chosen Sinton, Texas, as the site for its new $1.9 billion flat-rolled electric arc furnace mill, Kallanish learns from a company release.
The site is about 30 miles from Corpus Christi, Texas, which was widely expected to be the home for the new mill.
"We are extremely excited to announce our selection of Sinton as the site for our next-generation, new flat roll steel mill investment," says ceo Mark Millett. "We have been developing a flat roll steel business strategy for this region and Mexico for several years, and the team is ready to execute.”
Millett adds that the mill will be “...the most technologically advanced facility existing today,” due to its use of thin-slab casting technology and green steelmaking advances.
The annual output of the facility is expected to be 3 million short tons, with 550,000 st of galvanizing capacity and 250,000 st of coating capacity. Construction will begin in early 2020, with start-up planned for mid-2021.
