The U.S. weekly raw steel output recorded modest increase during the week ending on July 27, 2019, when matched with the comparable week in 2018. This is in accordance with the latest weekly domestic production statistics released by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). The weekly production edged higher marginally over the prior week.
The U.S. domestic raw steel production in the week ended July 27, 2019 totaled 1.884 million net tons (NT). The domestic mill capability utilization rate was 80.9%. It must be noted that the production had totaled only 1.838 million NT at a much lower capacity utilization rate of 78.4% during the corresponding week in 2018. Meantime, the weekly crude steel production increased marginally by 0.6% over the week. The production was 1.872 million NT during the week ended July 20, 2019.
The cumulative adjusted year-to-date U.S. raw steel production totaled 56.081 million NT through the week ending on July 27, 2019. This is higher by 5% from the production which totaled 53.431 million NT during the same period in 2018. The capability utilization rate too recorded notable jump from 77% to 81.1% over the year.
The leading producer was the Great Lakes region, with an output of 719,000 net tons during the week ending on July 27, 2019. The region accounted for more than 38% of the total raw steel output by the country during the week. The production by other regions (in thousand net tons) is as follows: North East-215, Midwest-193, Southern-686 and Western-71.
