Mexico reviews compensatory quota on Chinese plate imports

Mexico has initiated an official review to potentially extend a compensatory quota on imports of carbon steel plate originating from China originally implemented in October 2014. This is according to a document from the Mexican authorities monitored by Kallanish.

The country’s Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF) announced on 27 September that Mexican company Altos Hornos de México (Ahmsa) has complained that the removal of duties would negatively impact domestic production.

The compensatory quota was first imposed in October 2014 at of 33.98% for imports of steel plate sheets for all Chinese companies. The products under investigation are classified under HS codes 7208.51.01, 7208.51.02, 7208.51.03, 7208.52.01, 7225.40.01 and 7225.40.02.

The Mexican Secretariat of Economy (SE) determined that the period of investigation should be from 1 July 2018 to 30 June 2019 as announced in the DOF.

Anti-dumping measures will remain in effect during the on-going review.
