Crude Steel Output Surged 6.2% in Asia

The recent production statistics published by the World Steel Association (wordsteel) indicates that the crude steel output by Asian countries during the month of August this year surged higher significantly over the previous year. The Asian countries together accounted for approximately 74% of the total world steel output during the month.

The regional crude steel production totalled 115.078 million tons (Mt) in August, which is notably higher by 6.2% when compared with the production during the year-ago month. The regional output had totalled only 108.328 Mt in August 2018. The combined output during the initial eight-month period of 2019, at 890.896 Mt, was up significantly by 7.0% year-on-year.

China- the topmost steel producer in the region saw its output surge higher by 9.2% during the month. The country accounted for almost 76% of the total regional output in August 2019. The country’s crude steel output totalled 87.251 Mt.

India emerged as the second largest steel producer in the region, pushing Japan to third place. The Indian production totalled 9.350 Mt, whereas Japan produced 8.116 Mt. The Indian output increased marginally by 1.5%, whereas the Japanese output dropped sharply by almost 8% when compared with the same month a year before. The top three producers accounted for almost 91% of the total monthly output by the region.

The steel output by other countries in the region in August 2019 was: South Korea (5.941 Mt), Taiwan (1.890 Mt), Vietnam (1.816 Mt), Thailand (415,000 t) and Pakistan (300,000 t).
