The crude steel production by 64 countries reporting to the World Steel Association (worldsteel) totalled 1.240 billion tonnes in the year-to-date period until August this year. This is significantly higher by 4.45 when compared with the production during the corresponding eight-month period last year. The Jan –Aug ’18 crude steel production had totalled only 1.188 billion tonnes.
The Asian region produced 890.896 million tonnes (Mt) of crude steel from January to August this year. The production by the region climbed higher by 7.0% from 832.441 Mt in the comparable period in 2018. The Chinese output increased by more than 9% over the previous year. The surge in regional output is despite huge production declines in certain countries in the region including Pakistan and Thailand.

The Middle East crude steel output was up by 4.2%, whereas the African output declined marginally by 0.4% in the first eight months of 2019.
The North American output edged higher marginally by 0.8%. Although the U.S. production climbed higher by over 4%, the other major producers in the region including Canada and Mexico recorded sharp year-on-year production declines. The South American output saw notable decline by 5.8%, worldsteel data said.
The European crude steel output registered nearly 3% decline, whereas the Other Europe region reported sharper fall by 9.1%. The production by CIS countries managed to hold on to levels recorded during the previous year. Meantime, the crude steel output by the Oceania region slumped 6.6%.
