Crude Steel Output by Asian Region Surged 1.3%

The crude steel production by Asian countries reporting to the World Steel Association (worldsteel) recorded marginal rise by 1.3% in September this year, compared to the same month a year before.

The monthly production data indicates that the regional output totalled 109.650 million tonnes (Mt) in September 2019. This compares with the output of 108.175 Mt in September last year.

The production growth was led by China, whose output increased by 2.2% over the previous year to total 82.773 Mt. It must be noted that the country’s steel output had totalled only 80.959 Mt in September 2018. The Chinese production accounted for more than 75% of the regional total production. The second largest producer was India, which reported 1.6% year-on-year rise in output to 8.961 Mt. With a monthly output of 8.045 Mt, Japan emerged as the third leading producer in the Asian region.

The cumulative steel output from January to September this year by the region topped 1 billion tonnes. This is significantly higher by 6.3% when matched with the output of 940.413 Mt in Jan-Sep ’18. The three top regional steel producing countries were China (747.824 Mt), India (84.189 Mt) and Japan (75.639 Mt). Vietnamese steel output surged higher by almost 54% during this period. On the contrary, output by Thailand and Pakistan nosedived by 35% and 33% respectively.
