The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported that year-to-date steel shipments by U.S. mills recorded marginal increase over the corresponding nine-month period in 2018. The steel shipments in September this year declined over the prior month, but recorded notable increase over September 2018.
According to AISI data, the U.S. steel mill shipments totalled 7.767 million net tons (NT) for the month of September this year. This is down by 8.3% when compared with the prior month. The shipments had totalled 8.472 million NT in August this year. When matched with September 2018, the shipments were marginally higher by 0.6%. The U.S. steel mill shipments had totalled 7.812 million NT in September last year.

A comparison of shipments in the month of September this year with the prior month indicates notable decline in shipment volumes of hot rolled sheets, which recorded month-on-month decline by 10%. The shipments of hot dipped galvanized sheets and strip dropped by 9%. Also, cold rolled sheet shipments tumbled by 5% from August 2019.
The year-to-date steel shipments by the U.S. mills recorded marginal increase by 1.6% over 2018 to total 72.578 million net tons until September in 2019. This compares with the shipment of 71.469 million net tons during the corresponding nine month period last year, AISI data said.
