Asian Crude Steel Production Surged 1.6%

The recent production data released by the World Steel Association (wordsteel) suggests marginal increase in crude steel output by Asian countries during the month of November this year. The production growth by the region was led by China, whose output was up by 4% year-on-year.

The Asian region produced 106.745 million net tons (NT) of steel in November 2019, slightly higher by 1.6% when compared with the production during the same month a year before. The regional output had totalled only 105.049 million NT during November 2018.

The leading producer, China, accounted for almost three-fourths of the total regional output during the month. The Chinese output totalled 80.287 million NT. The second largest steel producer in the region was India, followed by Japan. The Indian output totalled 8.934 million NT, whereas Japan’s output dropped sharply to 7.743 million NT.

The November 2019 crude steel output by other countries in the region was as follows: South Korea (5.895 million NT), Taiwan (1.670 million NT), Vietnam (1.607 million NT), Pakistan (255,000 NT) and Thailand (355,000 NT).

The combined output by the region during the first eleven months of the current year was up by 5.1% year-on-year to total 1.210 billion NT. The three leading producers during Jan-Nov ’19 were China (904.177 million NT), India (101.954 million NT) and Japan (91.527 million NT). Vietnam’s production recorded 46% surge. On the other hand, crude steel output by Thailand declined the most, falling by over 34%.
