The government is asked to limit foreign steel investment in Indonesia

JAKARTA. The Ministry of Trade (Kemendag) is asked to make stricter regulations on investment and imports of steel products that enter Indonesia, to protect domestic industries.

This was conveyed by Commission VI of the DPR RI after holding a hearing with the Ministry of Trade earlier this week. The meeting was attended by the Director-General of Foreign Trade, Wisnu Wardhana and the Director-General of Metal Industries at the Ministry of Industry, Harjanto.

Wardhana said that his party had issued Ministerial Regulation (Permen) Number 10/ 2018 to regulate the import of iron, steel and its derivative products. However, this regulation will be returned to the Ministry of Industry.

Even so, the volume of iron and steel imports in January-October 2019 still rose by 2.7% YoY. Therefore, the Commission VI proposes the establishment of a Working Committee to address the problems of the national iron and steel industry. (KR/AR)
