The Indian government's plan to add 78,000 MW of additional power generation capacity by 2012 will boost steel consumption in the country. Central Electricity Authority (CEA) estimates that the projects will consume up to 8 million tonnes of structural steel, 5.13 million tonnes of reinforcement steel, 1.07 million tonnes of cold rolled grain-oriented electrical steel, 330,000 tonnes of special steels for substations and 270,000 tonnes of steel for conductors and transmission towers.
The CEA has announced its assessment of potential steel consumption in order to enable the industry to scale up capacities. The project includes the construction of hydro, thermal and nuclear power station across all regions of the country, starting from 2007 to 2012.
