Automobile import spending reaches US$523m

This year's automobile import reaches 28,000 cars, a 2.3 fold increase over 2006. In December, about 5,000 full automobiles worth US$73 million were imported into Vietnam, reported the general Statistical Office.

Therefore, Vietnam spent US$523 million importing automobiles in 2007 against US$208 million last year, marking the record figure so far, the GSO said.

According to general Customs Office, the volume of full cars imported in 2007 was mainly via airlines and two big seaports of Hai Phong and HCM City.

Open declaration proceedings that car import tariff reduced from 90% down to 80%, 70% and finally 60% encouraged importers and started a wave of importing original cars into Vietnam this year.
