Steel factory closing stacks prior to Olympics

Major pollution problems have convinced one of China's leading steel manufacturers to extinguish four blast furnaces, as part of a pledge to cut output by half during the Olympics.

Shougang Steel says more furnaces will be taken out of operation once the Olympics begin, cutting back production output.

Shougang plans to reduce emissions of sulphur dioxide, soot and dust by almost 50% in 2008.

It is estimated the company will suffer an economic loss of about US$350 million due to the furnace shutdowns.
