Orissa government on Monday said that two major projects-
Tata Steel and Posco-India - coming up in the state were delayed due to
frequent violence.
"There have been slow progress in Tata Steel's project
at Kalinga Nagar in Jajpur district and Posco-India project near Paradip in
Jagatsinghpur district due to law and order problems," chief secretary
Ajit Kumar Tripathy told reporters.
The state government reviewed progress made in six different
mega steel projects which propose to manufacture a total of 36 mtpa with an
investment of about Rs 1,08,586 crore.
Though all the companies had signed MoUs with the state
government for setting up of mega steel units in 2004 and 2005, none of them
had gone to production stage.
While Tisco had proposed to set up a six million tonne per
annum at Kalinga Nagar in two phases with an investment of Rs 10,400 crore,
Posco-India had planned to invest Rs 51,000 crore in its proposed 12 mtpa
Though two years had already passed since they signed MoU with the government, their progress was much below satisfaction, an official said.
