Vice President affirms country’s will to protect environment (Vietnam)

Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan affirmed at the Francophone summit in Quebec, Canada on Saturday that Viet Nam was ready to co-operate on environmental protection and sustainable development.

Doan praised the French-speaking community for selecting the environment as one of the main themes of the summit.

She said the Vietnamese Government appreciated efforts by the international community in general, and the French-speaking community in particular, for environmental protection.

She said Viet Nam had implemented many measures, including the building of a national strategy for environmental protection to 2010 with an eye to 2020. The country had also participated in many international conferences and signed several international conventions.

Doan stated that the French-speaking community should align itself with the United Nations and create solid relationship with other international organisations to solve disputes, eradicate hunger and alleviate poverty.

Leaders' talks

On the sidelines of the summit, Doan met with Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni.

Doan hoped economic and trade relations between the two countries would be further developed. She told the King and Cambodian government that incentives should be created for Vietnamese enterprises to do their business in Cambodia, which would be of mutual benefit.

King Sihamoni said he would follow the lead of his father, King Norodom Sihanouk, and work towards further strengthening the friendship and brotherhood between the two countries.

Doan also met with Belgium Premier Yves Leterme and thanked him for Belgium's aid to Viet Nam going towards developing education, science and technology.

Leterme said he admired Viet Nam's socio-economic development achievements, and said Belgian regarded Viet Nam as a foreign policy priority for co-operation and development aid.

The vice president also met with the President of Mali, Amadou Toumani Toure.
