Taiwan may open doors to mainland construction firms

Taiwan may have no choice but to open its doors to construction business from mainland China, under the free trade regulations of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Vice Minister of the Interior Lin Chung-sen said Monday.

Fielding questions in the Legislative Yuan Internal Administration Committee, Lin said Taiwan is a WTO member and such matters should be handled based on the WTO stipulations of equality and reciprocity.

"When we start planning in that direction, we will certainly consider the unemployment implications and make sure that the interests of Taiwan's construction sector would not be compromised by the ingress of Chinese developers into the Taiwan market," Yeh Shih-wen, director-general of the Construction and Planning Administration under the Ministry of the Interior, added.
