Production of Taiwan`s IC industry seen to fall 26.9% this year

Overall production of Taiwan's integrated circuit (IC) industry is expected to suffer a year-on-year slide of 26.9 per cent this year as a result of the global economic recession, the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) forecast Monday.

Officials from the MOEA's Department of Industrial Technology said the overall production of the IC industry -- the backbone of Taiwan's industrial growth -- totaled NT$1.34 trillion (US$39.41 billion) in 2008, down 8.1 per cent year-on-year.

Production is estimated to decline even further this year, to fall below NT$1 trillion, possibly to as low as NT$984.5 billion, marking an alarming decline of 26.9 per cent year-on-year, the officials said.
