Manufacturers may seek Map Ta Phut pollution appeal (Thailand)

Manufacturers in Rayong may ask the National Environmental Board to appeal the Rayong administrative court's ruling on designating Map Ta Phut a pollution-control zone, said Payungsak Chartsutipol, a vice-chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries. He spoke after the Joint Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking discussed the ruling's impact and found that 150 factories involving investments of 500 billion baht might be affected.

But Mr Payungsak suggested a national committee of environmental experts should be set up to investigate the impact of the ruling on the local community and economy.

''A proper study by experts would be acceptable to all stakeholders and the business sector, whose projects now face tougher rules and need to accept the outcome,'' he said.

The issue is expected to come up for discussion at a meeting scheduled for March 18, when proposals may be filed by businesses to the prime minister
