Car sales in Indonesia down 28% in first half of 2009

Car sales in Indonesia plunged 28 per cent to 209,679 units in the first half of 2009 from 292,670 units in the same period last year on price hikes.

All car makers in Indonesia raised their prices early this year, forcing consumers to delay plans to buy new cars, Joko Trisanyoto, the marketing director of PT Toyota Astra Motor (TAM), said.

However, the trend was on the increase month-on-month, Trisanyoto noted, saying the rupiah's recent strengthening had pushed up sales in the past month.
