Toyota to consider assembling cars in Malaysia

Toyota Motor Corporation has responded positively to a suggestion that it assembles some of its models in Malaysia. The automaker currently assembles in other countries.

“We have requested that they consider assembling some models here, especially those done in Thailand. We have received quite a positive response,” said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin after his meeting with Toyota Motor’s Senior Managing Director Datuk Akira Okabe and General Manager for Asian and Oceania division Hiroyuki Niwa here today.

Toyota Motor, is expected to announce the outcome of a market study done in Malaysia within six months, he told a press conference.

The study will indicate the possibility of expanding the range of Toyota models assembled in the country by UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd which also markets and distributes Toyota cars in Malaysia.

“This will help Malaysia become the export hub for Toyota cars,” Muhyiddin added.
