A motorcycle association has estimated that motorcycle sales this month could hit 700,000 units as people need vehicles for transportation during the Idul Fitri holidays early next month.
"I believe this month's sales will be equal to last month's sales of 701,258 units," Johannes Loman, deputy chairman of the Indonesian Association for Motorcyrcle Producers (AISI) said as quoted by kompas.com.
Loman said many companies also required their employees to own motorcycles for their work, particularly in marketing.
Yamaha Motor Kencana Indonesia president director Dyonisius Beti said the current growth was an anomaly. "It's more than expected, so it's good, but not really healthy," he said.
Loman said the motorcycle sales target of 7 million units this year might be accomplished, following strong sales of 4.2 million units in the first seven months of this year.
