Higher transport, housing and food costs pushed Singapore’s consumer prices up by 3.1% in July from a year ago.
Cars and petrol were the main items contributing to the 10.7% spike in transport costs, according to data released by the Singapore Department of Statistics yesterday.
Housing costs rose by 2.7% because of higher electricity tariffs and accommodation cost, while food prices went up by 1.5%, arising from dearer prepared meals, vegetables, fresh seafood, meat and poultry, as well as rice and cereals.
Excluding accommodation costs, the consumer price index was 3.8% higher in July than a year ago.
For the first seven months of the year, consumer prices have moved up by 2.1% compared to the same period in 2009
