Astra International controls lion share of RI auto market

Publicly listed diversified group PT Astra International Tbk (ASII) now controls 53.8 percent of the country’s automobile market.

Of 813,856 units sold domestically between January and November, ASII – the country’s biggest retailer – sold 438,111, as reported by Antara.

The company’s subsidiaries PT Astra Daihatsu Motor and PT Toyota Astra Motor, however, reported declining sales in November compared to the same month last year.

Daihatsu sold 10,312 cars in November, down 20.3 percent from 12,932 in the same period last year, according to the Indonesian Automotive Industry Association (Gaikindo).

Meanwhile, Toyota recorded sales of 15,265 cars in November, down 32.6 percent from 22,642 cars.

Gaikindo said the total number of car sold this year as of November was up 694,649 from the same period last year.

ASII booked Rp 13.44 trillion (US$1.4 billion) in consolidated net profits as of the third quarter, up 29.7 percent from Rp 10.36 trillion in the same period last year.

The profit bump was attributed to a rise in total revenue, which topped Rp 119.5 trillion, up 27 percent from last year’s Rp 94.4 trillion. (drs)
