RI, China probe renewable energy opportunities

Forestry Minister Zulkifli Hasan says Indonesia and China are exploring opportunities to develop renewable energy sources.

"It is important for the two countries to develop renewable energy in the face of declining fossil energy resources. After all, China has relatively advanced technology on renewable energy, such as solar and hydro energy technology," Zulkifli said as quoted by kompas.com on Monday.

Zukilfi made his comments after meeting Chinese Science and Technology deputy minister Cao Jialin, as reported by kompas.com.

Environmentally friendly wood pellets could be an option for renewable energy for Indonesia, the minister said, as it was a lucrative business that required tree planting.

Indonesian and Chinese business cooperation might be modeled on the nation’s relationships with South Korean investors.

Forestry Ministry secretary-general Hadi Daryanto said three South Korean investors secured a permit to develop 140,000-hectare timber estates with an investment of Rp 6 trillion (US$666 million).

Hadi said the investors also planned to build a wood pellet factory.
