MITI Begins Anti-Dumping Probe On Steel Coils From China, Vietnam

The Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) has initiated a preliminary anti-dumping probe on the imports of steel coils from China and Vietnam.

In a statement today, MITI said it has received a petition from a domestic producer, requesting an imposition of anti-dumping duty on imports of pre-painted, painted or colour coated steel coils from both countries.

"The petitioner alleges that imports of these steel coils from China and Vietnam are being dumped into Malaysia at prices much lower than in the domestic markets of both countries," MITI said.

The petitioner claimed this was causing material injury to the Malaysian industry but the increased imports resulted in the petitioner suffering material injury.

"In accordance with the Countervailing and Anti-Dumping Duties Act 1993 and its related regulations, a preliminary determination will be made within 120 days from the date of initiation," MITI said, adding that the government might impose an anti-dumping duty at a rate that was necessary to prevent further injury.
