Vietnam imported 1.295 million mt of steel products in May, down 9.1%
year on year, according to data released late Monday by Vietnam Customs.
The value of imports in May stood at $672 million, down 26.1% from May 2014.
In
the month, Vietnam mainly imported steel products from China (745,082
mt, down 13.7% on the year), Japan (239,017 mt, down 8.1%) and South
Korea (152,175 mt, up 24.8%), the customs data showed.
In the first five months of the year, Vietnam imported 5.273 million mt of steel products, surging 17.5% year on year.
The import value in the period stood at $2.97 billion, down 0.4% from the same period last year.
During
January-May, Vietnam mainly imported steel products from China (3.046
million mt, up 41.9% year on year), Japan (967,024 mt, down 0.1%) and
South Korea (672,715 mt, up 24.8%).
In May Vietnam exported 202,907 mt of steel products, down 2.2% from the same month last year.
The export value in the month stood at $142 million, 12.3% lower than May last year, according to the customs data.
Vietnamese steelmakers continued to increase production in May to meet rising demand from the domestic construction sector.
They
produced 582,839 mt of steel products for the construction sector in
the month, up 27% year on year, and sold 584,005 mt in May, rising 39%
from a year earlier, a report from Vietnam Steel Association showed.
In the first five months of the year, the country exported 981,241 mt of steel products, down 11.8% year on year.
The exports were worth $718 million, down 14.6% from January-May 2014.
Over
January-May, Vietnam mainly exported its steel products to Cambodia
(300,973 mt, up 4.9% year on year), Indonesia (202,811 mt, up 17.5%) and
Thailand (107,426 mt, up 10.6%).
