China Steel Eyes $300m Investment in Indonesia

Taiwan steel maker China Steel plans to establish a steel plant in Java or Sulawesi as part of its efforts to relocate some of its less profitable businesses out of the country to benefit from cheaper labor abroad.

The company has signed up local steel maker Artha Metal Energy to conduct a feasibility study for the project, I Gusti Putu Suryawirawan, the Industry Ministry’s director general of metals, machinery, transportation equipment and electronics, said on Monday.

Investment for the steel plant is estimated to reach $300 million, he added

Taiwanese companies from the machine tools, components, petroleum and plastic industries have expressed interest to relocate some of their plants to Indonesia or Thailand, Suryawirawan said.

The Industry Ministry has offered the use of an industrial complex in Banten, Cikarang (West Java) and Gresik (East Java) to accommodate demand for highly skilled labor.

Alternatively, the companies may establish their base in Sulawesi, which has shorter logistics route to Taiwan, the ministry said.
