BOC forfeits misdeclared steel products worth P1M

Misdeclared steel products valued at almost P1 million have been forfeited in favor of the government, the Bureau of Customs (BOC) reported yesterday.

These steel products were shipped from China to the Port of Manila (POM), but the Customs Enforcement Group (EG) intercepted the shipment after it passed through the X-ray machine manned by its non-intrusive inspection team.

BOC said the container van of steel was declared to contain 526 packages of cleaners used for softgel forming machine and moisture analyzer.

“The assessment made based on the declared imports only totaled US$16,450.00 or P773,150 contrary to its estimated Customs value amounting to P960,000,” it said.

Under the law, the importation of steel products needs to meet the specified safety requirements and obtain Philippine Standard License (PSL) from the Department of Trade and Industry-Bureau of Product Standards (DTI-BPS).

“This requirement is very important to stop the entry of substandard products in the local market,” Deputy Commissioner for Enforcement Ariel Nepomuceno said.

These steel products were forfeited in violation of Section 2503 or Undervaluation, Misclassification, Misdeclaration in Entry of the Tariff and Customs Code of the Philippines (TCCP).
