World DRI output posts marginal decline in December

The preliminary data published by the World Steel Association indicates that the world direct reduced iron (DRI) production in December last year has decreased marginally by 0.81% when compared with the previous month.

The world DRI production during the month of December 2015 totaled 4.544 million metric tons, up 0.81% when compared with the 4.581 million metric tons production achieved during November 2015.

According to World Steel data, India ranked first in DRI production during the month. Iran and Saudi Arabia were the second and third largest DRI producing nations.

The estimated DRI output by India during December last year was 1.281 million metric tons. The country’s DRI output in December dropped slightly when compared with the previous month. The DRI output by India had totaled 1.354 million metric tons during the previous month. Iran’s DRI production in December 2015 totaled 1.215 million metric tons, which is 3.49% higher when compared with the previous month output of 1.174 million metric tons. The Saudi Arabian DRI output in December last year amounted to 420,000 metric tons, which is marginally higher when compared with the output of 405,000 metric tons during November 2015.

The DRI output (in thousand metric tons) by the other eleven countries in December 2015 is as follows: Canada (97), Mexico (360), Trinidad & Tobago (80), Argentina (157), Peru (5), Venezuela (100), Egypt (206), Libya (60), South Africa (140), Qatar (205) and United Arab Emirates (219).

The World Steel production figures are based on the figures collected from 14 countries, which accounted for approximately 90% of the global DRI production in 2014.
