World DRI output posts modest decline in January

The preliminary data published by the World Steel Association indicates that the world direct reduced iron (DRI) production in January this year has decreased by 5.8% when compared with the month before that.

The world DRI production during the month of January 2016 totaled 4.281 million metric tons, down by 5.8% when compared with the 4.544 million metric tons production achieved during December 2015.

According to World Steel data, India ranked first in DRI production during the month. Iran and Mexico were the second and third largest DRI producing nations.

The estimated DRI output by India during January this year was 1.304 million metric tons. The country’s DRI output in January increased slightly when compared with the previous month. The DRI output by India had totaled 1.281 million metric tons during the previous month. Iran’s DRI production in December 2015 totaled 1.215 million metric tons, which is more or less flat when compared with the previous month output. The Mexican DRI output in January this year amounted to 350,000 metric tons, which is marginally less when compared with the output of 360,000 metric tons during December 2015.

The DRI output (in thousand metric tons) by the other eleven countries in January 2016 is as follows: Canada (100), Trinidad & Tobago (80), Argentina (160), Peru (6), Venezuela (105), Egypt (170), Libya (72), South Africa (140), Qatar (200), Saudi Arabia (100) and United Arab Emirates (219).

The World Steel production figures are based on the figures collected from 14 countries, which accounted for approximately 90% of the global DRI production in 2014.
