Vietnam scrap steel imports declined in January

The most recently released trade data indicates that scrap steel imports by Vietnam during the month of January this year dropped significantly when compared with the previous month.

Vietnam imported 172,000 tons of scrap steel during Jan ‘16. The scrap imports by the country have registered considerable decrease of nearly 35.1% when compared with the imports during the month before. The scrap imports by the country had totaled 265,000 tons during December 2015. When matched with the imports during a year before, the Jan ’16 scrap imports by Vietnam were down by nearly 3%. The country’s scrap imports during January last year had totaled 177,000 tons.

The average import price of scrap steel during the first month of the current year stood at US$179.0 per ton. The average scrap import value increased marginally by nearly 2% when matched with the previous month. The scrap imports by the country had averaged at $175.50 per ton during December last year.

The country’s scrap import values dropped sharply by over 45% to $30.65 million in January.

The cumulative scrap imports by the country during the entire calendar year 2015 had totaled 3.186 million tons. The scrap imports during the previous year had declined by 5.6% when compared with imports during 2014. The Vietnamese scrap imports had totaled 3.375 million tons during the entire year 2014.
