Iran overtakes India to become world's largest DRI producing nation

The preliminary data published by the World Steel Association indicates that the world direct reduced iron (DRI) production in March this year has bounced back by 6.33% when compared with the month before that.

The world DRI production during the month of March 2016 totaled 4.417 million metric tons, rising higher by 6.33% when compared with the 4.154 million metric tons production achieved during February 2016.

According to World Steel data, Iran overtook India to become the largest DRI producer during the month. India and Saudi Arabia were the second and third largest DRI producing nations.

The estimated DRI output by Iran during March this year was 1.290 million metric tons. The country’s DRI output in March increased significantly when compared with the previous month. The DRI output by Iran had totaled 1.206 million metric tons during the previous month. India’s DRI production in March 2016 totaled 1.221 million metric tons, which is marginally higher when compared with the previous month output. The Saudi Arabian DRI output in March this year amounted to 420,000 metric tons, which is modestly higher when compared with the output of 395,000 metric tons during February 2016.

The DRI output (in thousand metric tons) by the other eleven countries in March 2016 is as follows: Canada (99), Trinidad & Tobago (Nil), Argentina (90), Peru (5), Venezuela (60), Egypt (219), Libya (46), South Africa (74), Qatar (200), Mexico (380) and United Arab Emirates (312).

The World Steel production figures are based on the figures collected from 14 countries, which accounted for approximately 90% of the global DRI production in 2014.
