Steel price report as of January 4, 2011

Scrap

-          Prevailing market prices in Hebei, China for heavy melting scrap (over 6mm thick) up to RMB 3,250-3,300 per tonne ($492-500) with 17% VAT – source: SBB

-          Turkish scrap price up 15 USD per tonne to 475 USD per tonne CFR Turkish port – source: SBB

Semi-finished steel prices

-          Billet import price in Southeast Asia rose sharply in the second half of December to exceed 600 USD per tonne. Malaysian-origin billet at 615 USD per tonne CFR to Philippines. Russian billet was offered at 610-620 USD per tonne CFR before Christmas – source: SBB

Hot rolled coil prices

-          At the end of last week, HRC in Shanghai for Q235 5.5 mm was offered at RMB 4,480 (680 USD per tonne) with 17% VAT. Same product in Guangdong's Lecong steel market was offered at RMB 4,560-4,580 USD per tonne – source: SBB

-          Europe's HRC price jumped by 20 Euro per tonne to 600 Euro per tonne in January – source: Yieh
